So You Want to Get Plastic Surgery in Korea? Good choice! What procedure would you like to get done? Eyes? Body sculpting? Breasts? Facial reconstruction? Nose? South Korea is the plastic surgery capital of the world and is seen as an industry leader in technique, customer care, and service. So whatever process you would like done can probably be done here! But, you still do have to get anesthesia and be under a knife. With an overwhelming number of clinics, hospitals, and information online in general, it can get confusing and be a daunting task to research. Hopefully, with the information this article provides you, it becomes an easier and friendlier process!
How will you find a surgeon or clinic that you can communicate with well and take care of your needs? Many people coming into Korea to get their procedures done have used the services of medical tour centers and their coordinators. However, there are a few more options available, such as apps, and walk-ins in addition to tour centers. There are positives to all of these choices so make sure to choose whichever service works for you!
Medical Tour Centers act as one-stop shops for anyone looking to get a cosmetic procedure done. Although each center may offer different services, they generally offer help with finding a doctor that is right for you, making consultation and operations reservations, interpretation services, and transportation services. Some even offer travel packages and can organize shopping trips, cultural experiences, or different beauty/spa procedures.
The most accessible centers around the Seoul area are the Medical Tourism Information Center (MTIC), The Medical Korea Information Center (MKIC), and the Gangnam Medical Tour Center (GMTC). These three centers are only available to use for foreigners, so make sure to have your passport ready with you.
The MTIC and MKIC are backed by the Korea Tourism Organization through the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. The MKIC does not seem to have a comprehensive online website, however, the MTIC can be accessed at Visit Medical Korea. Both can also be contacted by phone and email and are the best services for walk-in consultations. The MTIC has three offices in Seoul, Incheon, and Busan. The Incheon office is inside Incheon International Airport, located at Terminal 1, so it is even easier to access if you would like to consult with someone before even leaving the airport. The MKIC is located in Jung-gu and while helping with medical consultations they are also the best place to ask for legal help and tax refund information. Each province also has medical tourism centered around the region so if Seoul is not your last stop, there are other possibilities available to you too. The MTIC also provides more information on their website.
The Gangnam Medical Tour Center is located at Apgujeong Station off of exit number 6 on subway line 3. The GMTC offers many different services, online and off. They have many services, such as interpretation services, reservation help for medical consultations and hotels, and they also provide airport pick-up and drop-off services. They also have services to help medical tourists receive their C3 (M) or G1 (M) visas, medical mediation in case of a dispute. The GMTC also has an experience zone where they offer free counseling with a medical coordinator. While there, you can also receive a free medical check-up that includes skin analysis, full-body analysis, and blood pressure tests. Their website is also a good place to get suggestions for clinics and doctors in the Gangnam area as they are all vetted by the Gangnam-gu district office.
There are also apps available on Google Play that may help in your search for the right doctor. Some of the most popular apps used are called GangnamUnni, Babitalk, and BeautySocial. The three all offer reviews, information about clinics and doctors, promotions and discounts, and explanations of popular processes. While all three are very useful, for the English speaking community, BeautySocial is the only app completely available in English. The apps are all free to download and you can make an account on the platforms using Kakaotalk, Naver, Facebook, Google, Line, or your email. If you don’t feel comfortable making an account, BeautySocial is the only app where you can view content without doing so.
You can also find reviews of clinics and hear about the process of certain procedures on Youtube. Typing in ‘plastic surgery experience in Seoul’ into the search bar will bring up a plethora of videos. They are mainly vlogs, with the vloggers explaining their journey; why they chose the clinic that they did, and will walk you through from the consultation to recovery. Some YouTubers even include how they have healed a significant time after their operation. This is a good place to see the consultation process first hand and the inside of a few of the largest clinics in Seoul. Hopefully, the videos can help you feel more comfortable before actually stepping into any office. Although, a few of the videos you come across will be sponsored by clinics so keep an open mind when watching!
The General Routine
Okay, you’ve arrived in Korea, found your doctor, and decided where you’re going to stay. Now, after sight-seeing around Seoul for a bit, it’s time for your consultation. With the help of your medical coordinator or interpreter, you’ll pick the date for your surgery and post-op check-ups. Before your operation, you’ll most likely be instructed to fast 8 to 10 hours. Make sure to do as told. Not doing so will make it difficult for your operation to proceed as planned. The doctor will go over what will happen one more time, then surgery will commence. Once out of surgery, you’ll be left to recover and wake up from the anesthesia. Take as much time as needed after! You don’t want to take a woozy tumble while getting back to your hotel or home. Most clinics will schedule multiple post-op check-ups to see that you’re healing well and everything is okay. Don’t miss them! They can help with pain management and ensure that infection doesn’t become a problem!
Congratulations on your successful operation! Hopefully, your experience was smooth sailing and that you’re healing quickly and well!
